Abstract: This bibliographic essay focuses on research that has explored symmetries of non-representational geometric pattern created in cultural contexts. I provide annotated discussions and full bibliographic citations of recent studies of symmetric patterns on tiling, textiles, basketry, ceramics, sculpture, architecture, and other materials. I describe studies that reveal how this focus on pattern structure as measured by geometric symmetries enhances insights into the meaning and function of symmetric pattern created on these cultural materials.
Keywords: symmetry, pattern structure, cultural pattern, layered and plane symmetry.
