Abstract: Due to the lack of systematic reviews on the role of asymmetry in product design and manufacturing, this paper aims to explore key concepts, map new trends, identify main challenges, and summarize some future directions within this topic. In addition, the study introduces two new concepts: Design for Symmetry (DFSym) and Design for Asymmetry (DFAsym), contributing to systematizing the role of asymmetry in the domain.
