SYMMETRY FOR CHILDREN USING DRAWING BOARD TOOLS AND TANGRAMS

Abstract: Young children are unable to use Euclid’s tools for geometric constructions. However, children as young as 5 years can construct equilateral triangles, hexagons, squares, and other geometric figures using scaled-down traditional drafting tools: T-square, 30-60 triangle, and 45 triangle. Older children can draw lines of symmetry and construct figures about a line of symmetry both vertically and horizontally using tangram pieces. Through this work, children will appreciate geometry and experience the beauty of mathematics.
