SYMMETRY, GEOMETRY, AND FLUIDITY: THE MORPHOLOGICAL LOGIC OF THRESHOLD SPACES IN TROPICAL ARCHITECTURE

Abstract: This study investigates symmetry, geometric order, and spatial fluidity as a morphological logic redefining tropical architectural boundaries. By positioning landscapes as primary structural generators of transitional thresholds, it challenges static regional tropicality. Analysing four Indonesian Tanatap cafés through diagrammatic mapping and section collages, the research evaluates four geometric configurations: radial symmetry around central voids, curvilinear repetition across layered boundaries, multi-level portal alignments, and multi-axial floating canopy roofs. Findings show that balancing geometric symmetry and systemic asymmetry decouples programs from rigid enclosures, transforming spatial voids into active social systems. Additionally, these open configurations offer qualitative frameworks for passive microclimatic adaptation and seamless indoor-outdoor continuity without mechanical containment.
